Choosing Your Favorite Sci-Fi MMO

By Nathan R. Robel

The design teams that make sci-fi MMO games, also called massively multiplayer online games, do not limit themselves to making these games to fit just one single genre. Games are now advertised to people around the world by means of the Internet so competition amongst game designers is getting rather stiff. In spite of a long history of excellently crafted science fiction games today's designers continue to astound gamers with new releases. For game makers to create a true "hit" game that will be treasured by players they have to develop high quality games in the most popular genres.

Role playing games, or RPG's, have a certain set of design features that are usually applied to sci-fi MMO games. These adventures allow you to create an individual character with specific traits, abilities, and attributes that will notably influence the way you play the game. The massively multiplayer features of an MMORPG come to the fore when the missions you receive in the game are extremely difficult and cannot be completed unless you have the support of a team of other players.

Sci-fi MMO shooter games are also quite popular because they use futuristic weapons, tense visual and audio cues, and dramatic camera angles to make an awesome gaming experience. First person shooters, which allow you to see the game's world as if you were really the character, can be quite intense and force you to battle enemies face to face. Shooter games emphasize the importance of having a complete arsenal with varied weapons that can come in handy when facing specific enemies that have a vulnerability that you can capitalize on if you have the right weapon.

As game designers continue to push the limits on new games they are starting to mix genres together and develop new games that are not as easy to categorize as some of the more classic games were. For example, many first person shooter games also contain elements common to puzzle games such as elaborate puzzles, confusing, maze-like worlds, and time restricted missions. You may notice leveling systems and experience points common to RPG's appearing in many shooter games as well.

There are all kinds of different sci-fi MMO games now available to gamers who would like to enjoy the excitement of battling enemies in a futuristic fantasy world. Modern MMO designers have made many excellent games that incorporate details from lots of popular genres; they are certain to appeal to all gamers.
