A Review Of The Power Of Art

By Cathy Mercer

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. That is the power of art. In general art comprises many things. These include paintings, drawings, collage and mosaic works, music, theatre and even literature. While all these fields have their own unique features, there are many similarities between the; they are all creative works. They all require one to use a certain skill to present an idea.

There are many roles of this field. The main one is, of course the fact that it acts as a means of communicating different messages or emotions or imitating. Many have grouped art alongside religion and science because all these three fields are concerned with the human mind. As a matter of fact, a branch of philosophy concerned with the interpretation of these creative works has been created. This field is known as aesthetics.

Creative works may take various forms. The form is merely a shape that is taken by the piece of art as determined by the kind of medium that is used to create it. Forms are broadly classified as either two-dimensional or three dimensional. Works that may be created in two dimensions include paintings and pictures while those that are created in three dimensions include sculptures. In some cases the two forms may be combined.

In order to stand out from other players in the industry, most artists will choose to adopt a unique style that they can be identified with. This style may simply be the selection of medium that is used. A number specialise in the use of metals such as silver, bronze and gold while others prefer wood or limestone. Painters may choose to be unique by using particular colours or textures.

Creative works have various roles that are classified as either motivated or non-motivated. The non-motivated roles are those that are restricted to representation of human being nature. They are designed to celebrate human nature; its strengths and weaknesses. In simple terms, they are what happens around us and what often passes for ordinary. There is a huge variation in the way that this kind of art is communicated across the different cultures of the world.

Motivated functions include those consciously intended by the creator. These could simply be a form of communicating ideas, feelings and moods to external parties. They may also be a form of illustrating science. In addition, art serves as a kind of entertainment through providing mind relaxation to viewers. Visual images have also been used to bring about change in the political system of a given country or region.

Creative works have also been used in the fight for social justice. For instance, graffiti may be displayed in public places such as bus stops, walls, bridges and other public places to communicate special messages. Although they may deface the surface on which they have been created, they always attract attention and pass their message across. Other social issues that might be addressed in this manner include environmental conservation and awareness of diseases and medical conditions.

The other area where the power of art can strongly be felt is the financial aspects that are associated with the creativity. Talented performers have turned their passions into careers and are living comfortably. Sculptors who use precious stones such as gold and silver sell their pieces at prices that often earn them a fortune.
