Where To Buy Silk Painting Supplies

By Marissa Velazquez

Thanks to the fact Serti technique is so popular lately, silk painting supplies can be found just about in any art store. Applying dyes and paints on this luxurious textile is easier than people believe, and this simple technique really gives amazing results. Anyone can do it, all you need is to be a little creative and have some time to try it.

If you are a beginner, maybe the best solution for you is to buy a special painting starter kit. It contains all those things you will need to get started painting on this amazing fabric. You will find different special paints there, pushpins, sumi brushes and foam brushes, as well as very detailed instructions to help you get started.

When it comes to colors, there are so many of them it could be hard to decide which ones to buy. You don't have to buy all of them at once. It is much easier to buy one of those practical starter sets that contain several basic colors you might need. Sets usually contain several small applicator bottles, and you are able to try out different paints without spending too much money. When you find out which ones you prefer, you can buy larger containers.

Basic color sets usually contain all popular colors such as magenta, golden yellow, turquoise, violet and scarlet. Of course, if you already have an idea about your painting, it will be much easier to choose the colors you need. In any case, you will probably need some basic colors.

The main characteristic of Serti technique is the fact all colored areas are sharply bordered and defined, using resist or gutta lines. Clear water based resist should be removed once the design is completed, but some types are design to stay on, and can be colored. In any case, once the dye is set, you can remove the resist, or not, whatever you choose.

In any case, you need to wash the material first, and to iron it when it is still dump, to make it perfectly set. Another thing that you need is a frame. You can buy it in any art supply store, or make it yourself. The role of the frame is to stretch the silk and to remove it from the surface of your table.

People usually draw their designs on some paper first. It's really easy to transfer them on the textile later, using simple pencil. Some vanishing markers are also available, and they make this work even more simple. Of course, you can apply your design directly on the material, but it is much easier and safer if you are doing it this way.

Now it is time to fill the applicator with resist. Attach a special tip on the top, and you are ready to start applying resist on the fabric. Once the resist is dry, you can apply the dye. After that, simply remove the gutta, or leave it on. Your lovely design is done, but you have to fix the color to make it permanent. The method of fixing depends on the type of silk painting supplies used.
