Identifying Genres For The Anime Reviewer

By Estelle Larsen

Animeeshon, known for its big eyed, small mouthed characters, has many exclusive styles. While it is very common to find worldwide works of horror, science fiction, action, and the like, manga has genres that cannot be found in other films. The culture depended on it.

If you are an avid watcher and have noticed certain patterns in many shows but can not put a finger on it, you just might have missed the exact label. Here is your chance to learn about other genres if you are still a new anime reviewer. Let us skip the basics and go with the specifics.

Films that have a pilotable robots in the center of their story are known as mecha. These robots could be gigantic, humanoid, or even a set of small ones combined to form an ultra mega robot that can destroy its enemies. They are generally at war with each other or are fighting off evil.

Two romance sub categories are harem and ecchi. Harem refers to shows with a lone male central character with many female characters competing to win his love, and are usually living in the same house with him. Ecchi is a perverted but humorous approach to romantic films and may even be called softcore, but because they never show explicit content, they cannot be classified as hentai. Hentai is the harcore porn of the anime world, where tentacle rape has originated along with other bizarre fetishes.

The magical girl genre shows innocent girls, typically cute and young, to transform into some super heroine version of their own selves. The plot involves these girls fighting an evil force. They tend to be prepubescent or teenage, and themes such as love, friendship, and growing up revolve around these characters.

Renaissance men and women are not rare in the manga universe. In fact, there is a whole following dedicated to the idol genre, the type where the overtalented becomes rich and famous. It is usually a rags to riches story and may have some slice of life bits.

You would probably be very familiar with card battles and monster war types. With their self explanatory description, it is not hard to tell that protagonists and antagonists using collectable cards as weapons belong to card battles. Monster wars define the universe where cute and adorable monsters can be schooled to fight for their masters.

Tales with lesbian couples as main antagonists are identified as shoujo ai while male homosexual love is shonen ai. Shonen ai literally means boy love. They are subgenres of romance and are aimed towards children, hence the toned down double entendres. If you need to go pornographic, look for yaoi and yuri. Yaoi are for boys while yuri are for girls. Hentai is the overall porn industry of manga, and this is where tentacle fetishes came from, and they have very little or no storyline at all.

There are subcultures dedicated to each form of anime, and infiltrating them will help you become familiar to the works. But perhaps the most helpful hint in actually determining the genre is to know the target audience of the show, as for example, shonen ai and shoujo ai are for young boys and girls while yaoi and yuri are for adults. Their alternate universes are cues and their characters are the giveaways, but the real deal is about for whom they are intended.
