Understanding Simple And Complicated Symbols In Poetry

By Patty Goff

Being a student of literature, you may have a hard time dissecting and analyzing short stories, novels, plays, and poems of the great popular authors. Your professor might be giving you home works that will require the understanding of the meanings of words and phrases when knitted altogether. There is a need to unlock the words to understand it.

Literature stands for the opinions, views or perception, feelings, and the emotions of the writer. These writings give us messages indirectly and as readers we have the responsibility to connect and unlock the nouns, verbs, and adjectives to come up with an interpretation of symbols in poetry that have been used. The depth of the symbolism and language plays an important role to make the writing mysterious.

All poems and plays have a story to reveal either happy, sad, or glory. But most poems highlight the memories of love, silence, grief, war, success, death, and even defeat. They correlate pain and misery to darkness, uncertain events, and cold ambiance. Memories are the favorite theme as it depict real life experiences and easy to select words.

Symbolism is a technique widely used by creative writers to deliver a deeper meaning of the words instead of using the literal words. Aside from memories and experiences, writers love to put into words the things that they do observe around them. It is hard to understand especially if you are new to literature and symbolism.

There are books that you can buy in bookstores wherein you can study the meanings of symbolisms used by writers. You can also access websites over the internet which is dedicated to love of literature. If you can observe, the words allow you to imagine what the writer is thinking. But this is done indirectly outlined and this is really a challenge to most students.

Now if you dare ask why writer choose symbolism, well, the answer is simple -- to create strong feelings and vibrant images in the mind of the reader. It also takes out the feelings and amazingly unique and unexpected reactions are formed after. Aside from drawing out emotions and pictures it is also a way to creative and artistic writing.

Wanting to learn the use of symbolism as your main method of writing, you better begin with writing few words than writing many descriptive sentences or phrases. Just limit your words. Use your imagination in expressing and losing your emotions in paper. Do not rush things. Flow the imagery of lines that suit best to your motive of writing. The content should be hard and exciting.

Good written poems have different interpretations depending on the reader's perspective. Only the author knows the correct interpretation. The words seemed to be opposite, disorganized, and obscured all the time. It makes it more magical.

Literature classes are very challenging. As an aspiring writer, better look for a teacher who can teach you basic symbolism techniques. Teachers can guide and assist you as you learn higher and difficult writings.
