Create Striking Home Designs That Showcase Your Impressionist Prints

By Sarah Murphy

Some people can just look at a room and know how it should be decorated. Others have no idea and usually opt for something easy like purchasing sets from furniture stores. There are a few who would really love a living space that is original, creative, and well designed, but are novices at decorating. These individuals should take the advice of professionals who use artwork, such as Impressionist prints, as the foundations for their room designs.

If you aren't able to start from scratch in a living or family area of your house, look around at the color scheme you already have. You may not even realize you have developed a particular color palette, but you probably have. There are certain shades and tones of particular colors that each individual leans toward.

Since you are using artwork to complement your design, you will want to choose prints that have similar tones and shades to your existing furnishings. You don't have to worry about things matching exactly. That might end up looking contrived and commercial. The colors just need to work together to avoid clashing unpleasantly.

People who have never really looked at art before may feel a little overwhelmed and not know where to begin. You can always check out some art books from the local library to get a feel for the periods that most interest you. You will find that within one genre there are many different styles, subject matters, and brush stroke techniques. Your room design will look very different if you choose works by Pisarro rather than Degas, for instance.

Hanging art in a room should be done with some thought and care. It can make all in difference in whether or not your room comes together when you are finished. The configuration of the space may determine the height and juxtaposition you choose. If you have a fireplace with an interesting mantel, you might decide to hang your principal piece above it to draw the eye's attention to that particular area of the room.

Many artists had strong political opinions and personal preferences when it came to subject matter. If you find a work that is compatible with something you feel strongly about, the work will be much more than decorative. Feminists might choose to showcase only works by women Impressionists like Mary Cassatt. A ballerina study by Degas could be the preference for someone who is a patron of a local ballet company.

If you live alone, you can go any direction you want with room design. For those who live with roommates, partners, and family, some consideration for the tastes of others should be shown. Involving family members in art choices will probably improve everyone's satisfaction with the final design.

Although a lot of Impressionist works are extremely famous and easily recognized by many, you can choose to select a lesser known piece that you like and see if your guests can figure out who the artist is. Decorating walls with good prints can make for interesting conversations.
