A Brief Overview Of The Most Dominant Hip Hop Record Labels

The music industry is known to generate revenue that amounts to billions of dollars annually in America. Some of the most successful artists started from scratch and made lots of money for themselves by exploring their talents. However, the hidden fact is that the popularity of rappers largely depends on the capacity of their hip hop record labels to transform them.

Over the years, labels have come and gone. However, those that have stood tall against competition are the ones that are famous today. This list, in no particular order, expounds on some of them and their associated artists. Many renowned labels began in the nineties and at the turn of the new millennium.

Starting off the list is Shady Records. Its founders are Paul Rosenberg and the rapper Eminem who have seen it produce many hits since 1999 when they founded it. Its inception took place after the debut album of Eminem was released. It keeps churning massive hits despite is small number of artists.

The label that follows is Aftermath. It had a significant role to play in the expansion of Shady Records. The group came to be in 1996 when Dr. Dre, the rapper cum billionaire businessman, founded it. Eminem is on record saying Dr. Dre helped mentor him when he was starting out back then. Eminem first rose to prominence through the group.

Many fans of this genre also like to mention Death Row Records when talking about the greatest brand names in the industry. Its artists are globally known to be talented and classic. The thing that strikes the most about its artists is that they are unique. After the deaths of famous rappers Tupac and Biggie, the recording house was stalked in controversy.

A worthy mention is the Def Jam Music Group. Its widespread influence can be felt in all corners of the globe. Notable acts under it include Ja Rule, Beastie Boys, Nas, DMX and Jay Z. In the early 2000s, new prospects such as Pusha T, Rick Ross, Kanye West and Young Jeezy joined the group and excelled through it. Its many global accolades arguably crown it as the best modern recording ensemble.

Another important mention is Cash Money Group. Some noteworthy artists in its books include Hot Boyz, Lil Wayne and Drake. These artists have maintained their style despite massive influence from equally popular genres like RnB.

The list would certainly be incomplete without a mention of Maybach Music Group. It founder is the rapper Rick Ross. While the group produces great music, its distribution is managed by Atlantic Records. The group is home to great rappers such as Omarion, Wale, Meek Mill and Ross himself. After the release of the first album by the group in 2009, it went ahead to release a further 21.

There are plenty of other groups that are picking up pace. The industry undoubtedly has a lot on the table for would be musicians and people who want to invest in it. With time, the success of new entrants will come to light.
