Guitar buying questions to ask yourself before you begin

By Angelo Vedzizhevi

When your looking to get yourself a new guitar, their are some important things to think about while your making your choice. Take a look at some of the things you should be considering.

Many might not consider the aspect of playing a guitar sitting versus standing, however how comfortable a guitar is in both playing positions can be very important for one to consider before making a purchase. Check em out both ways and put a strap on so you can stand up as well.

What kind of sound are you going for? Some guitars are super bright and even border on twangy, while others may be much richer and fuller. How many pickups does the guitar have? What kind of pickups does the instrument have? Is there a mixture of pickups as well as control over which ones are active at a time?

Guitar tuners are often included in certain guitars as well these days. It's a great add on if you can find one on a guitar that you like as well. It's a real convenience to be able to have a built in tuner for gigging or guitar lessons.

If your guitar is made with a heavy or very solid wood, this can impact not only the feel and comfort of the guitar but also the tonality. Just another thing to think about when making your decision.

How bout the type of finish and color? Are you looking to pick up something that's real slick looking, possibly trendy or do you think you'd prefer a more classic look? Are you going to be happy with this guitar for a while?

Is the guitar well suited for various situations? Will this be the only guitar that you'll own or will you purchase another instrument to complete your tonal range.

Checking the guitars intonation is very important as well. By hitting the same note in various positions on the neck one can listen to see if the guitar is still in tune. Be sure the intonation is good on any guitar before you buy it.

What kind of warranty does the brand issue with your purchase? If your buying a used guitar you may be able to get a warranty from a store as well.

While the internet has a ton of guitars available, it's pretty important for you to go into a guitar shop and actually play some guitars in person. If your lucky, you'll get to find some awesome shops that carry a vast inventory for you to check out.

If you head into a larger shop, you may find a much better selection of guitars on the wall. However, smaller shops may be able to give you much better service and possibly offer you incentives like a free guitar lesson.

These are simply just a few questions for you to ask yourself to help you purchase the right guitar to suite your needs. Whatever you do take your time and try out a bunch of them. Talk to some different guitarists as well.

You may get some valuable insight from going to some live music gigs and seeing what instruments seem to work best with various types of music. I hope this has helped give you some food for thought and gives you some valuable insight.

Enjoy your quest to purchase your guitar.
