Taking A Screenplay Workshop Is Smart

By Patty Summers

Improving your writing skills can be done through taking a screenplay workshop. It is fun and usually free. It is good there is usually no charge for this. If you were to take a course on the subject, there would most likely be a charge. Taking a course would be a good idea, too. Either way you do it, improving your skills is important.

Learning the details of the written script is important. A general formula generally exists for how to get from beginning to end. This is not hard for those that are used to writing. If you know this formula, you can apply it to this formula. It is okay to go out of the formula, but not too much especially in the beginning unless you are really confident.

Dozens of topics are out there for a writer to explore. Politics, religion, social inequalities. The list goes on and on. All of these topics are very interesting. Look at each one carefully to decide which one is best for you to write about. Keep practicing them over and over until you master it.

A workshop or a class is a great place to improve these skills. Reading a book on the given topic is also good. Feedback is what you need to see how the words sound to others. This will really help you get better. It can also help you sell your script later. Pitching the written work the right way is very imperative to selling it. There are classes for that, too.

Being persistent is the key to anything in life. Writing is no exception especially with selling to Hollywood studio executives. Getting your work in the right hands is not hard. Going to a weekly meeting will be a good place to bounce off ideas with these people to make sure you are doing the right things or not. If you are not, make adjustments. If you are, enjoy what you are doing.

The Internet has a host of places to learn about improvement of writing skills. You could pay online or send them a money order. The class may also be offered online as well. It may be a synchronous class or a class in which you can attend whenever you want. Just log into the class whenever you want and then do your assignments.

Decide which form of learning you are best at. Some people work better with a teacher which would be similar to a workshop type of setting. Others would like the virtual classroom. There are advantages and disadvantages so make sure you know your learning style. Be disciplined with both types and finish all the work expected of you. Learn as much as you can.

You must motivate yourself. The glories of taking a screenplay workshop can be such where you have real people there cheering you on and helping you understand what to work on and what is good about your work. Decide for yourself which way you learn best and make plans accordingly. This could be quite a rewarding experience and one that you will not forget.
