The Purpose Of Wearing Jewelry By Phillip Romero

By Rachael Gutierrez

People do not only where the ornament on their body or on their clothes for only the artistic display. The reasons why people use jewelry can be numerous depending on the circumstances that are surrounding an individual. A general purpose that cuts across many of these individuals is however the beauty aspect. Phillip Romero argues that one can wear these ornaments only for the personal adornment.

These ornaments are diverse in nature and can include the necklaces, rings, and the earrings. The pattern that is used in the wearing of these ornaments varies greatly in the sex and in the culture. Different cultures have different ornaments worn by specific individuals at a specific time. In most of these cultures the male are however not involved fully in the use of these decorative devices. The percentage of those who use is very small.

This therefore makes it important for a person to carefully select the type of ornament that they are wearing and at what time or occasion. This will avoid any form of criticisms from the public and they can avoid misleading others in making wrong judgment about themselves. The selection can be based on what is accepted by the culture and the religious beliefs that they embrace.

The purpose of wearing jewelry can involve the artistic display or for beauty. These ornaments are either attached on the body or on the clothes. Those that are used on the body can either be placed naturally like the necklace or they might require some body modification. Modification that is majorly involved includes the body piercing to allow the use of earring and other rings that are embedded to the body.

Some specific ornaments can as well act as a symbolic membership of a person to a certain group. These therefore act as a guide to the culture or the religion that a person embraces. The wearing of these ornaments in addition reveals the royalty of the person to this group. Any person that is looking at them can easily associate them to that specific group.

Most of the western countries use the ring as a symbol of the wedding commitment. During the wedding ceremony the parties that are involved place a ring in the finger of each other to always remind them of this commitment that they have towards each other. Anytime the other member is swayed astray the ring will always assist them in making the right decision for the sake of their marriage. It is therefore the symbol for the covenant that they enter into.

In addition there is the functional use of these items. They are not only used as some form of beauty of symbolic representation of a culture but also for functional use. Not all of the items that belong to this category can however be very use full in the functional aspect of life. Only a specific category of the entire ornament family can be relevant in this area.

For instance the watches are some of the best example in the functional use. Phillip Romero shows how a person can be able to know what time it is by the aid of these ornaments. They are usually worn at the hand just like the amulets and buckles. The reasons why people use jewelry essentially depend on their belief on the matter and the culture or the religion to which they belong.
