Color is something that people in the field of both arts and science would have to learn about because it is a thing of everyday life. Now when learning about pigments and shades, one will first be learning the basics which deals more on the basic colors and mixing them. Of course when that is done, one will then be going on to the advanced color theory.
Now if one has not taken up the basics yet, then he should at least know about the color wheel which was invented by Isaac Newton. In a nutshell, this wheel is somewhat like a chart that would be showing people the primary colors and the secondary colors that are created. The primary colors are yellow, red, and blue while the rest are all secondary colors.
Now in the advanced theories, one will now be learning now the more complicated ways on how to blend colors. It is in here that one will learn to make different shades based on the mixture. The five basic things that one will be learning about here would be hue, chromaticism, saturation, value, and luminance.
Now the very first concept that one will learn about would be the hue. Now in a nutshell, the hue is the measurement on how much one primary color differs from the other two. This would actually be measured on how much light the primary colors give off and how strong they are.
Now the second concept on the list would be chromaticity or just simply chroma. The chroma would be measuring how colorful a pigment actually is by measuring the hue first. If one would find out that a certain shade has maximum hue, then it will have low chroma but if it has minimum hue, then it will have a high chroma.
The third concept to learn about would be saturation which measures the intensity of a pigment. When one would say intensity, he would be the strength of its brightness and how much it would affect the eyes. Colors that are bright like red, yellow, and other mixes with these are known to have high saturation.
The second to the last concept is known as value. Now value is the actual measurement of the brightness. When one would say that a certain shade has a high value, he would mean that the shade has a high level of brightness.
The very last concept on the list that will be taught would be luminance. Now in order to measure luminance, one will first be using a mathematical calculation which involves getting the average of a group of colors and using a unit that is known as intensity per unit of the source. Measuring this is actually quite like measuring saturation but it has a lot more calculations.
