Screenwriter Tools For Film And Television Writers

By Mark Phillips

When it comes to attending college for film and television, there are often a number of different projects. In one case, students are often asked to create a script or screenplay. While some may participate in stage acting, others are asked to create a script from start to finish. In most cases, the final product will be screened in class for a final grade. When this is the case, students might find a number of free and paid screenwriter tools of great assistance to the project.

One of a number of software applications and screenwriting tools, Celtx, allows writers to access and move through script changes more quickly than without such software. For, the software assist writers and producers with a number of planning tools from creation and editing to shooting schedules.

The first step in the Celtx package is known as Concept to Complete, which involves writing, breaking down and creating a storyboard, scheduling and budgeting productions. One way in which this is possible is by using a shared file in which all writers, editors and production crew members can work on, and communicate about a project at the same time.

While this may sound like a challenge, the easy to use software makes learning simple, is easy to use & designed to facilitate real-time collaboration. In large part, it is this real time collaboration that can save movie makers a great deal of time and money. For, in the past a hard copy script had to be delivered and reviewed by editors and producers whom may or may not have been available at the time.

Another benefit of working with these screenwriting software applications and tools is that individuals can work from anywhere in the world on a number of devices. In fact, producers, directors and writers can now work on multiple projects all over the world thanks to this feature. For, writers, editors, actors and producers all have the ability to carry on conversations in real time. As such, it can often be far less time consuming when it comes to agreeing on edits, thus allowing these individuals the freedom to work on multiple scripts.

Whether using Celtx or other free writing software and tools, the steps are often the same. Generally, the process starts with a screenwriter telling a story, or in the case of a documentary, a vision. After which, the pre-production process begins. When using an application or screenwriting tool, writers often find it easier to organize ideas and thoughts regardless of the type of project.

Creating storyboards is something which most writers enjoy. For, it can be a creative way of communicating an idea, story, plot or vision. After which, pre-production continues with blocking shots to mark camera locations, lighting and cast positions. In addition, making sure all talent, stage designs, wardrobe, props and equipment are on location and ready for filming is essential to a successful project.

Finally, creating a list of proposed shots for production, planning the shot type, angle and movement and assuring cast is on hand is the final step in preparation. After which, scheduling shooting dates, locations and keeping cost in check is essential to a successful project. Once all of these issues have been addressed, it is time to start filming.
