50 Shades of Grey is a number 1 bestseller about a young twenty-two year old college student named Anastasia who winds up falling head over heals for a wealthy business owner named Christian Grey. The book starts when Anastasia's roommate and close friend Katherine requests that she fill in for her at an important job interview, because of her sickness. Ana accepts and goes to the interview. When Ana gets to the job interview, she's automatically captivated by Grey's stunning good looks. Though Ana is at first attracted to Grey, she's intimidated by him as well. Because of this, she gets very anxious and begins to mess up throughout the whole interview.
The moment Ana leaves, she immediately comes to the conclusion that the whole job interview went terribly wrong. In an attempt to ease her stress, she thinks to herself that she'll most likely never see this charming young man again. Little did she know that she would eventually run into him at the hardware store where she works. The moment he approaches the register to make a purchase, Ana informs him that her roommate would like to request photos of him to go with the article she was putting together. Christan then ends up giving Ana his number.
As soon as she gets home, her roommate instantly convinces her to contact Grey and schedule a photo shoot with him and her professional photographer Jose. The following day, Anastasia, her roommate and Jose go to Grey's hotel room to begin the photo shoot. Grey then casually asks Anastasia if she wouldn't mind having a cup of coffee together. Once the both of them begin conversing over coffee, he asks her if she is seeing anyone. She then tells him that she's not seeing anybody. Throughout the course of the conversation, Ana finds out that Christian is also single. Ana at this point does not think that Christian is what some would call a total angel. Ana is very interested in Grey because of this, and becomes more intrigued by him after he saves her from getting run over by a cyclist. Even though Ana is beginning to start getting more interested in Grey, she thinks that she just isn't his type. One evening, Anastasia goes out for a few drinks with her good friends and winds up getting extremely intoxicated.
In a drunken frenzy, she calls Christian who then informs her that he is on his way to pick her up. While Ana waits for Christian's arrival, she goes outside for a quick breather. While outside she runs into Jose the photographer, who tries to sneak in a kiss. He is however unsuccessful at his attempt due to Christian showing up and spoiling his plans. Christian then takes Ana back to his hotel room. When Ana awakes the next morning, Christian reveals to her that he would like to have sex with her. He then takes it a step further by asking her to fill out paperwork. He later changes his mind after having kissed Ana in the elevator. Later, the both of them go out on a date. Then he takes her back to his apartment in his helicopter. Once they arrive, he again asks her to sign a contract, which does not allow her to discuss any of the sexual acts they do together. Ana agrees to the terms and signs the contract. Christian then informs her that there will be another contract which will consist of dominance and submission, with absolutely no romance involved. He wants the relationship to be strictly sexual. The contract even forbids her from making eye contact with him. Christian later finds out that Ana is a virgin and agrees to be her first, without making her sign the contract. Then the two end up having sex. The next morning, Ana and Christian have sex once again. As the days go by Ana starts to receive several packages from Christian, which included a laptop as one of the items. This way the two of them were now able to start emailing each other. Ana then becomes skeptical about the whole arrangement and tells Christian that she would not honor parts of the contract, which included her only being able to eat food from a specific list. She starts to think to herself what the results might be from having a relationship that is based purely on sex with no romance.
She later meets up with Christian to discuss her concerns. Feeling overwhelmed by the whole situation, she decides to stop seeing Christian. The both of them later meet up at her graduation, where he was a guest speaker. Ana then decides to start seeing Christian once again to further discuss the details of the contract. During this time Ana experiences being spanked for the first time. This leaves her feeling rather confused about the whole experience. On one hand, she seemed to like it, on the other hand she didn't know to react to this. She is temporarily kept happy due to Christian constantly buying gifts and taking her to meet his family. Despite all this, she continues to question the nature of the contract and their relationship. Ana later scores a job with a Seattle Independent Publishing company. The relationship between her and Christian gets even more complex when she decides to test the extremities of the relationship. She asks Christian to punish her by beating her. Christian grants her request and starts beating her with a belt. Ana then realizes that she does not want to be with Christian anymore. Feeling extremely devastated about the whole situation, she decides to leave Christian and moves back in with her best friend Katherine.
