How To Find Acting Jobs For Teenagers

By Doris Rivas

While an acting career can be a glamorous profession, it is also a very competitive field. Many people embark on a performing career though few become movie or television stars. For teens, such a career can be even tougher as they are not only competing against fellow teens for roles, but also actors beyond their teen years who still appear young enough to play teen roles. Therefore, it is important to use many resources when looking for acting jobs for teenagers on the screen and beyond.

Enroll in a school drama program. A key component to several college drama programs is performing in several student productions. Such productions may include the classics, musicals, comedies and costume dramas. Students may also have an opportunity to complete acting internships and apprenticeships, as well as audition for professional jobs. For younger teens, a performing arts high school may offer similar opportunities.

Contact a community theater. Local and regional theater companies generally present at least one production each season. Keep an eye out for companies that traditionally stage productions that involve young characters. Depending on the level of funding, there may be a limited number of paid jobs available.

Contact the film studies department at a local college or film school. Film studies students use both amateur and professional actors in their films. Performing in student films is a great way for a novice to get experience on a film set.

Consider employment on a cruise line. For older teens with other talents, such as dancing or singing, performing in a cruise ship show may be an option. Contact agencies that specialize in cruise ship entertainment casting.

Look for online casting notices. Many websites focus on providing casting notices to aspiring actors. While many companies provide this service free of charge, some sites charge a fee for access to more lucrative casting notices.

Subscribe to trade publications. Some magazines and newspapers solely focus on the entertainment industry. These publications are available online and in print. Casting notices as well as information about upcoming productions can be found in trade publications.

Hire a talent agent. An agent is essential when seeking mainstream film and television roles. A talent agent has access to casting notices that the general public does not. A talent agent does far more than just get his client work. He also negotiates things such as salary and billing.

Audition for a reality show. Some reality show participants have been able to capitalize on their appearance by landing acting roles. Focus on auditioning for reality programs that are broadcast on television channels that are targeted at young adult and teen audiences.

Pursue work in other visible areas. Teen pop singers and models are often sought out for film and television roles. Being a familiar face or voice to audiences may give you an edge when competing for more lucrative roles.

There are several avenues to locate acting jobs for teenagers. Teenagers with a lot of experience may have more success than novices. Nevertheless, utilize many resources to secure acting work.
