James Weldon Johnson was the infamous composer of the song. He was a graduate from Clark-Atlanta University who was being employed as the principal in one of the major public schools in the town of Jacksonville, Florida. James Johnson, the author of the song was born 6 years after the termination of the Civil War, in the year 1971. His father was employed as the head waiter in one of the upscale hotels of Jacksonville while his mother was a learned public school teachers who emphasized moral education and the worth of formal education.
