How To Select A DJ For A Brilliant Party

By Bill Schmidt

If you are thinking about having a house-party or hiring a venue you will probably be wanting to hire the services of a DJ. A good DJ will know exactly what to play by reading the crowd. Here are some things to consider when you need to know how to select a DJ for your party.

The first choice has to be the type of music that is to be played. If you are having a wedding party then there will be people of different generations present, as well as people with a wide range of music tastes. In this case it is probably better to keep music mainstream and play chart hits as well as classic hit songs from the 60s to the present day.

If your party is mainly for people of your own generation who are young then you have many choices. You could have a party that plays dance music, such as Dubstep, Progressive House Techno, Drum and Bass etc. Or you could have a party that plays Indie Music, by bands such as The Smiths, Joy Division, Tame Impala, Neon Indian, Stone Roses and many others.

It can be quite fun to have a party that plays a specific genre of music, such as reggae or even just 80s pop classics. It may also be fun to have several DJs playing a different genre of music at each set. Maybe culminating in a fast dance music set as guests get more energetic.

Experienced DJs are able to read the crowd of dancers and play music accordingly. This is an important skill to have when playing dance music, as the rhythms and tempos can reflect the behavior of the crowd. This can make a party last all night.

Some DJs prefer to use vinyl rather than play MP3s, although many are fine to play from a laptop with DJ software such as Tractor or others. Some DJs may also make their own music or mix up classic music combining beats and samples to create their own tracks. The DJ DJ Shadow is well known for taking this approach.

Often the best choice for a DJ is someone that you have seen before, this way you know that they are going to get the party jumping. But if you haven't it may be worth taking recommendations from friends. A good DJ will ask a lot of questions regarding the party, such as who are the guests, what is the age range and so on. It may also be worth taking a look at the DJs collection of music in order to find out how knowledgeable about music they are. Some DJs may only play the music that they like, but this may not be the same as the guests at the party.

So if you are planning a party and are wondering how to select a DJ to make it very specials, these steps may well help. It is not hard to find an experienced and good DJ that will know how to make a party jump, and one that your friends will be taking about for a long time after. Many professional DJs have their own website where you can listen to example of the kind of set they do; you can also look at comments made by the people who follow them.
