Am I Eligible For A State Satellite Phone Subsidy

By John Whitley

Hello. My name is John Whitley, founder behind satellite phone sales - Australias number one satellite communications online store.I want to answer one of the most typical questions I get from Australian Satellite Telephones purchasers

Am I fit for a Government Satellite Phone Subsidy ?

The following information will steer you in the correct direction with this query but please be aware there aren't any fixed rules and the Govt. investigates each application on its individual merits. First let us look at the reason why the subsidy exists to start with. The Australian Federal Government has an obligation to provide reasonable communication to anyone who lives inside Australia. Australia nonetheless , is a massive country and the price of putting up substructure for just one or two people in a specific area may not be the best use of central authority funding.

To give as many people as feasible in Australia the chance to have everyday communications through the telephone, in 2003 the Government created the Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme. Since that time it has gone through many modifications, the newest one in July 2009 giving it a new lease of life for another couple of years. The purpose of the subsidy is to assist those folks that live or work at least 3 months of the year in remote parts of Australia.

You could be eligible for the subsidy if:

1. You live in an area which doesn't have mobile phone coverage, or

2. You work at least 3 months of the year (this doesn't need to be in one continuing period) in an area that does not have cell telephone coverage. Recently we saw the subsidy rules relaxed so that even if you plan to be away for six months across the next 2 years you can be eligible. Another great thing about this subsidy is that, given that you are admissible, it is really easy and fast to get. The subsidy can be for a new or second-user satellite phone as long as it is purchased from one of the Central authorities authorised subsidy partners.

The amount of the grant changes often but currently ranges from $700-$1,000 or up to 50% of the acquisition price, whichever seems higher and dependant on circumstances. It is paid directly to the dealer and you pay the amount due of the acquisition price.WORDS OF WARNING: They won't give the grant out for a satellite telephone which has already been purchased. It is only for new sales. If the satellite phone is to be used mainly overseas you won't qualify for the grant.

This suggestion is a credit to the Governing body and the employees that administrate it. The application takes just five minutes to complete and it's not strange for us to see them authorised within 7 days.If youd like to understand anything more about satellite telephones and the Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme or would like an application please contact us and we are going to be happy to help you.I trust you found this information handy.
