Ways Space MMO Culture Works

By Aaliyah I. Herzog

As online role playing games get to be more popular around the world, many of them, including space MMO titles, are developing their own unique culture. There are literally millions of players signed up for massively multiplayer online games around the world, making this a big part of the modern gaming industry. The developers that dedicate themselves to make and manage these games have to constantly stay on top of changes in the game since the game's servers are constantly running and players can log into the game 24 hours a day from distinct parts of the world. MMORPG's gather together many gamers and form a new community with its own culture based around the game they enjoy together, complete with its own terminology and customs.

Space MMO games are always being updated by their designers so that there is fresh content for players to enjoy and the game never becomes boring. Buffing and nerfing are two MMORPG expressions that are common in the online gaming world and refer to the way game designers tweak the character roles in the game to update the game play. If a character class is improved upon and new skills are given to it that could give that class considerable advantages over others, it is said to have been buffed. Nerfing is the opposite and refers to a basic reduction in character strengths brought on by an update to the game itself or just to the skill set of a particular class.

Most space MMO games use a leveling system to help you track your progress through the game and gauge your character's abilities against those of other players. One of the manners in which this is accomplished is through grinding, which means fighting one enemy after another in an effort to gain experience and move up to a higher level. While it is not typically a favorite part of online gaming, grinding is considered to be one of the basic elements of all MMORPG's and is a very common term amongst gamers.

The basic element of online games is their social features, such as in game chat systems that let players talk to one another as they play. Every game has its own chatting culture, such as abbreviations that refer to locations, enemies, and items in the game those players are sure to learn as they play.

Some outsiders may be surprised to hear that space MMO cultures exist, but the reality is that the community of gamers is very strong. You are certain to understand the terminology of the gaming culture more as you become a part of that community.
