I hope that after reading the following advice regarding your online identity and unique brand, you'll go out, inspired, buy beats from a beat website, rap like crazy, get that mix tape recorded, and obviously, use these tips that will help any musician who might be lost as to where to start, or even if your ego is high and you think you're doing it right but you're doing it all wrong! Social media is the first animal you want to tackle! Get at least five social media pages that you can link together and start creating great content, photo's, videos, music, and relationships/connections! It's great for a lot of things and if you aren't taking advantage, START TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA. I recommend at least getting a Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and LinkedIn. The rest are up to you, but those four are essential!
Collaborate with other artists similar in your style, whether it's someone you know or someone online. If you Google "collaborate musicians" or similar searches, many sites that make this easy will show up. Collaborating is a great way to connect with more people in your niche as a rapper.
It's fun to say something that might strike some chords in others! So do this with your music, promotion, and blog posts. It might sound weird, but it will get you attention, and even if some people disagree, the ones that agree will be even more supportive and even back you up! So be controversial occasionally to stir the pot.
Get on Youtube with your face, music, and other random stuff that could possibly go viral. Youtube is HUGE, and considering a lot of people have a camera (even if it's on your phone), you can record anything anytime, and post it anytime. Take advantage of video blogging, song/mixtape promotion, and a lot more. You can release your whole mix tape for free as one video depending on the length and promote it like crazy. Radiohead did that "free download or donate" marketing strategy, so why not give your stuff away for free for a bit, which will definitely get you many targeted fans!
In case you are into playing living, contact venue promoters locally (look up your city and venues, then ask for info from each). Try to book as many shows as possible. Advertise these simply by finding venue marketers who know how to advertise their shows. Meaning a lot of shows are sold out!
Before you think about sending your mix tape demo, give the recipient a call (that way when they get it, they'll remember your phone call and be more inclined to listen).
Be a unique artist. Offer more than just your rapping skills. Even if it's just a hobby, find a way to make that part of your brand as a musician. Get a graphic designer to make your logo, get a web designer to make your website, or even better, DO IT YOURSELF! That will also make everything more unique and true to yourself as a person and rapper.
Now it's time to get business cards! Vistaprint is the best for that from my experience. Best prices and great quality and quantity! These are great to have when you're around people that could be potential fans or customers of your CD.
Find yourself, write down a plan, put that plan into action. Sometimes planning is the longest part but doing it right the first time is important, rather than rushing out there to market yourself when you're not ready and comfortable with yourself. You will be interviewed and need to be able to answer questions. Don't get nervous about this though, as long as this is your passion, spending time planning your future as a rapper or musician is nothing at all, and sometimes even fun!
