By Margaret Kennedy

Your lip consists of thin and soft skin that is prone to crack, chaps, and peels. It requires regular care to keep it strong and healthy. Use of moisturizer that contains harmful chemicals worsens the already bad situation. In case you are living in an area that experiences much wind and sun, you will have to deal with chapped and dry lips on a regular basis, if you are not careful. Instead of buying moisturizer when you are not sure if it will be effective, consider making a handmade organic lip balm. It is both cost-effective and healthy.

Precision is the key to making a quality homemade moisturizer. You have to know what ingredients to use. Conduct rigorous research and find out appropriate ingredients to use. Making the balm at the comfort of your home presents you with an opportunity of making any type of design. Tablespoon measure is best method of ensuring the correct amount of ingredients is used. The common ingredients include three parts of liquid carrier oil; I part of base wax, 1 part of solid butter, and 2 to 3 drops of essential oil.

Beeswax can be substituted with candelilla wax, but not in equal measurements. When you are making a recipe substitution, a bigger volume of candelilla wax can be used. When castor oil is used during the designing process, a quality lip balm that leaves a glossy shine can be made. However, you will need to use a small amount of castor oil probably half tablespoons. The trick is to list down the ingredients and design a recipe.

Start by placing the selected liquid oil, beeswax, and solid butter into a measuring cup. The cup should be heatproof. Place the cup into a saucepan containing a small volume of water probably 2 inches to design makeshift double boiler.

Heat the water gently and ensure the ingredients present in the cup have melted. Wipe the outer surface of the cup to eliminate chances of water droplet getting inside the cup. After adding two to three droplets of essential oil, stir the mixture thoroughly. Pour it into small tins or filling tubes.

The filling tray increases convenience, hence you should make a point of buying it. Large-scale production is possible since the tray has enough tubes. After the mixture has cooled down, cap the tubes, label them, and soften their top parts using a heat gun.

Oils are available in diverse categories. This creates flexibility since you can use different type oils interchangeably. Impurities tend to accumulate on the dermal layer of your lips; a moisturizer made of natural and herbal products can be used to remove them completely. Bases such as sunflower, sweet almond, and olive oils are preferable.

To make the lip balm healthier, infuse it with herbs or natural colorants. During the designing process, pour some powdered herb into the Mason jar, add oil, cap it, and store it for 4 or 6 weeks in a dark cabinet. It will stay form almost a year before expiring. Be careful when you are adding essential oils, which are citrus based such as lemon and bergamot. They tend to increase sensitivity of the skin to sun.
