What is Meant by SIP Trunking?

By Emily Collins

The world of business is one that has been evolving at a rapid pace; from the technological side of things such as SIP, VOiP and many other acronyms, right across to the importance of management, recruitment and flexibility on the Human Resources side.

The relationship between technology and workplace management is becoming clearer and more easily definable with each new economic and management trend, but to really understand the benefits of these technologies, we first need to understand how they work.

The less jargon fluent amongst us might be wondering exactly what SIP trunking entails. A SIP trunk on the most basic level is a technology that allows organisations to go beyond the most basic level of communication in the company and extend the connectivity further afield. The VoIP and media service is facilitated by external telephony service providers and allows an organisation to benefit from unified communications. This technology works via PSTN connectivity via trunking online and differs from a traditional telephony service which is based on physical PSTN lines and wire.

There are a number of reasons that this is beneficial. Mainly owing to the point that those applications often facilitated by SIP trunking allow for innovative and new ways of communicating. including voice, video, whiteboard sharing, web conferencing and desktop sharing. There are not only fewer wires to trip over but numerous benefits that allow for a service which is more streamlined, connected and flexible.

Gone are the days when each member of staff had a stand alone direct line and now we embrace the fact that our phones are connected to our computers, which are often connected back to our mobile and smart phones! Whilst we may not all understand the ins and outs of SIP trunking, we can all identify with the technology upgrades that we've witnessed in the workplace over the past few years.
