Tips For Choosing Christmas Concerts NYC Groups Organize

By Gloria Mason

A large part of a Christmas celebration is music. Both traditional and modern carols help put people in a festive mood. In addition to numerous offerings of recorded music, there are several Christmas concerts NYC residents can attend.

Prior to searching for an event, a family needs to decide exactly what kind of music they prefer to listen to for one to three hours, particularly if they prefer instrumental or vocals. Also, some events may lean more towards secular music while others may be religious. Regardless of if the event is marketed as secular or religious, traditional carols may not necessarily be performed.

Attend professional instrumental performances. If you prefer mostly instrumental music, then you have many options. Professional orchestras, string quartets, concert bands and symphonies prepare for concerts devoted to this time of year. The home concert halls of such groups are normally where the events take place. The city may also coordinate performance by these groups that are free and open to the general public.

Attend amateur performances. Check out performances given by college or high school concerts bands or orchestras. These events are open to both the school community and the public. Further, there is usually not a charge to attend. These performances may be of high quality and make for an enjoyable evening.

Seek out events held at local churches. Churches are a great place to attend events that incorporate vocalists and instrumentalists. Many larger churches produce musicals filled with music, dialogue and pageantry. Churches prepare weeks if not months in advance for musicals. Church musicals have a two or three day run are usually free and open to the public.

A church holds performances by vocal groups. Normally, the main choir or several choirs based at the church performs several selections. A choir from a nearby church or university may also sing a few selections.

Attend a concert given by a recording artist you like. A more costly option is to attend a concert of a recording artist. Some recording artists book events where they sing a few carols along with other songs. If the event is linked to the occasion, several artists may perform.

A concert may take place weeks or perhaps a couple of months before the special day. Some groups do this to lengthen the festivities a little longer. Others do so in order to give group members additional time to spend with their loved ones.

Use several resources to search for events. Events can be found in a variety of ways. Local newspapers often print a calendar or related events. This calendar is updated as more organizations send in their information. The internet is also a good resource to check for events. Go to the websites of large churches and classifieds sites as well as online magazines and newspapers. Additionally, keep an eye on bulletin boards for postings of Christmas concerts NYC residents can attend for little or no cost.
