Blu-ray Player Buying Guide 2012/13

By Cecilie Blaber

The Blu-ray Disc association is the developer of the Blu-ray which is an optical disk format. It has over the years replaced the DVD and has capabilities of recording, rewriting and playing back videos that are in high definition. It has a massively large storage capacity, holding up to 25GB on single layer discs and 50GB on discs that have dual layers.

Owning an HDTV without a Blu-ray player is somewhat useless. You will never know what it's capable of until you connect the HDMI cable, and with its price now less than $100, there's no excuse of not getting a Blu-ray player for an ultimate experience.

Factors To Consider Prior To Buying

1. Ability to connect to the internet

2. Home networking ability

3. Its ability to work in 3D

4. Upgrading ability

5. Its compatibility with the particular system in question

6. Recording of the Blu-ray

Internet Connectivity

A large number of the players are designed with internet connections through the use of Ethernet cables or Wi-Fi systems. Preference shifts to use of wi-fi due to the convenience it comes with. Some manufacturers, more so the large ones like Samsung, Sony and Panasonic offer their internet portals that contain their own features as well as content. One of the best online experiences is offered by Samsung through their Internet@TV that has wide ranges of music, videos and social sites for networking.

Home Networking capability

A majority of the Blu-ray players allow creation of home network for file sharing from computers. The different file formats supported should be checked first though. Among the formats accepted are MP3, HD, MKV, DivX, DivX HD, JPEG, JPEG HD and AVCHD.

3D capabilities

Most of the companies in the business already introduced 3D capable Blu-ray players. Of course, you would need a 3D capable TV to acquire the extra dimensional experience. Sony's range of 3D capable players is worth considering; if you own a PS3, you can update it with their firmware for 3D capability.

Up-scaling

Old DVD collections are able to be up-scaled using Blu-ray players. DVD collections designed for viewing lower quality 576i resolution on CRT screens are able to get upgraded to 720p or 1080i 1080p resolutions. Image quality is enhanced through addition of details to the upscale source.

Ability to be compatible

The players can handle DVDs and CDs, that is for sure. There are people who may want to have access to photos on DVDs or in flash discs, or even movies found in the internet. These features come in handy for opting to use the devices as digital media hubs. The specification sheet should be checked before making a choice.

TIP: Blu-ray players have vast ranges of quality. As such, key features have to be considered before before arriving at a conclusion on what to go for. Blu-ray records are also worth consideration, especially so for individuals with big storage capacities of either 250GB or 500GB.
