Let Burning Spear Music Talk For Your Soul

By Kari Ratliff

For just over 3 decades, the legendary Burning Spear music has been available over radio and and on different stages around the world. He was born in Jamaica in 1948 by the name of Winston Rodney. The songs and lyrics Rodney produces are greatly influenced by activist Marcus Garvey and famous Jamaican musician Bob Marley.

Rodney met Bob Marley in 69', who then introduced him to Clement Dodd, and suggested that he start at Mr. Dodd's studio. Rodney and his bass singer, Willington, auditioned and then recorded their first single, "Door Peep". They were also accompanied by Delroy Hinds, a tenor, which made them a trio.

The three of them recorded some more great singles for Mr. Dodd's label, as well as two albums prior to going to work together with the famed Jack Ruby during 1975. "Marcus Garvey", the first of the recordings with Mr. Ruby was released first as just a single, which gave them a hit. Following that was the single "Slavery Days". After these successes, the trio, accompanied by The Black Disciples, worked together in 1976 on a third album called "Marcus Garvey".

When this record was out in the market they managed to close a great deal with the Island Records label. This company offered the band a broader release of their album. After the label altered a few of the tracks, the band and fans were aggravated, resulting in Rodney wanting to start his own label. In late 1976' he decided to separate from Ruby, Willington and Hinds.

In 1977, Rodney produced the album "Dry and Heavy" with Island Records and performed at the Rainbow Theater in London with the band Aswad. This show was recorded and later sold as a live album, which was also a big success. Soon after this, Rodney and the band "Aswad", featuring Sly Dunbar and Rico Rodriguez got together for his next album, "Social Living", which was released in 1978.

In 1980 he left Island Records, setting up Spear Label, then signing to the firm EMI Records. His first record with them was "Hail H. I. M.", which was actually recorded at Bob Marley's studio "Tuff Gong" and then co-production was by Mr. Aston Barrett. In 1982, he then signed with a company called Heartbeat Records and had a whole series of massive hit albums, which included the Grammy nomination for Resistance in 1985.

By the mid 1990's, Rodney created the Burning Music production company, and since then, has lived in Queens, New York. He was able to make and handle his own bookings. In 2002, he and his wife Sonia restarted their business with Burning music.

Rodney still tours and has released many live albums. He got his first Grammy in 2000 with the album "Calling Rastafari" and his second in 2009 with the album "Jah is Real". Burning Spear music portrays honesty by peace and love, which happens to go according to his political and religious messages. Fans all over the world support and recognize this man for his great efforts in the music industry as well as the role he plays in society.
